German Grammar; Conjunction

Adjective Akkusative case  Conjunctions Short, individual sentences can sound uninteresting in both writing and speech. To make language more appealing and flow more smoothly, use conjunctions to combine sentences. Coordinating conjunctions The most commonly used coordinating conjunctions in German are aber, oder, und, denn, and sondern (but, or, and, because, but rather). A coordinating conjunction combines two independent clauses, each of which can stand alone and make sense. When a coordinating conjunction combines two independent clauses, normal word order takes place, which means that the verb is the second element in each of the two clauses. German Grammar Drill 05; Present Tense

Present Tense The English present tense is more complex than the German present tense. English has three forms to consider: habitual I speak German. incomplete or progressive I am speaking German.emphatic I do speak German. German has only one present-tense form, which is similar to the English habitual form, but it can be translated into all three English forms: Ich spreche Deutsch. I speak German. I am speaking German. I do speak German. Regular verbs German regular verbs are those that do not make a change in the stem of the verb when conjugated. The stem of the verb is the infinitive minus the -en ending.  For example: heben                                              heb fragen.                                            frag Let’s look at a few regular ve...

German Grammar Drill 05 Interrogatives

Questions and Interrogatives Just as English questions do, German questions fall into two major categories.  There are questionsthat can by answered by ja or nein (yes or no); other questions begin with an interrogative word such as wer (who) and can have a variety of answers. Yes and no questions German questions that are answered with either ja or nein place the present or past tense verb, the modal auxiliary, or any other auxiliary before the subject of the sentence. The result is a question. For example: present Spielst du Schach?  Do you play chess? past Waren Sie schon in Berlin?  Were you already in Berlin? modal Könnt ihr mich verstehen?  Can you understand me? present perfect Hat Martin das Fenster zerbrochen?   Did Martin break the window? future Werden wir bald essen?  Will we eat soon? No matter what tense the German verb is in, the first element in a ja or nein question will be a conjugated verb. Interrogative words Words that ask for informa...

Note: Book pdf is at end, you can download it. Determining Gender For the most part, the gender of English nouns is based upon being male, female, or an inanimate object. German is similar only in a small degree. Many nouns that refer to males or females are masculine or feminine respectively. But this similarity to English soon ends. The gender of most German nouns can be determined by examining their makeup. Certain prefixes, suffixes, and structural elements are signals that a noun is a specific gender. And that gender doesn’t necessarily have to do with the noun being male, female, or inanimate. Masculine nouns can be identified by the following characteristics:  1. Nouns that refer to males: der Vater, der Junge (father, boy)  2. Many nouns that end in -er, -en, and -el: der Lehrer, der Wagen, der Mantel (teacher, car, coat)  3. Days of the week, months, and seasons: der Montag, der Januar, der Herbst (Monday, January, autumn)  4. Foreign words with the accent ...
